Tongji Law School - Sino-German Comparative Law Double Degree Program

In 2013, Tongji Law School established the Sino-German double degree program in comparative law with Humboldt University and University of Konstanz in Germany. More than 20 students will be enrolled each year, with more than 10 Chinese and German students from each country. After intensive language training and courses on Chinese and German law at Tongji University, Chinese students participating in this program will further study for another one year at the partner university in Germany and they will receive two master's degrees after graduation. This program has been successfully running for 9 years now and has cultivated more than 130 Sino-German master students, some of whom continue their doctoral studies in Germany after graduation. Now, this program is well-known both in China and in Europe.


Elite University

Tongji University, founded in 1907, is a university directly under the Ministry of Education, which is one of the key universities under the national 985 Project and 211 Project and has been selected as a world-class university. After more than 100 years of development, Tongji University has become a comprehensive, research-oriented and international university with distinctive features and international influence, and its comprehensive strength ranks among the top universities in China.

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, founded in 1810, is a public comprehensive research university, a member of Germany's elite universities, and is known as the Mother of Modern Universities. Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin enjoys a high reputation and has strong research capabilities in the humanities, and its law school is one of the best in the world, ranked 41st by QS in 2022.

Universität Konstanz, founded in 1966, is one of Germany's leading research universities, a member of Germany's elite universities and the Global Consortium of Universities and Institutes of Higher Education. With its spacious campus and many of Germany's top-ranking professors, the university was praised as a mini-Harvard on Lake Constance by Der Spiegel. The university is renowned in Europe for its top-notch social sciences and interdisciplinary development.

Applications

The Sino-German double degree program in Comparative Law is based on an application system.


The German language requirement for admission to the German partner universities is 16 points on the TestDaF (4 points each for listening, reading and writing) or DSH 2. Students must satisfy the German language requirement before they are dispatched in their second year of study.

Sample of Certificates


After successfully completing all the courses and defending the dissertation at Tongji University and the German partner university, students will receive two degree certificates, namely the degree of Master of Laws (LL.M.) from Tongji University and the degree of Master of Laws (LL.M.) from Humboldt University or Konstanz University in Germany.


Tuition and Scholarships

Students participating in this program shall pay no additional tuition fees and will receive generous scholarship funding. Students will be required to pay regular graduate tuition at Tongji University and will receive full academic scholarships and bursaries. As for the partner university, tuition at the universities in German is free and students will only need to pay the registration fee. International travel and living expenses will be covered by the China Scholarship Council (CSC) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) scholarships, with a 98% approval rate in previous years.


After Graduation

So far, the program has trained more than 130 Sino-German double degree students, among whom more than 70 are Chinese. The graduation rate is 100%. Importantly, graduates of this program are highly competitive in their careers. Most of them are engaged in foreign-related legal business in Chinese or German law firms or famous enterprises. Some of them are engaged in various positions at universities, courts and government departments, and others choose to pursue their further studies for doctoral degrees in Germany after graduation.


Mr. WU Guide is a graduate student of Tongji Law School of 2013, and a Sino-German Double Degree Program Student (at Humboldt University of Berlin). He is currently an Assistant Researcher at the Law School of Peking University.

Mr. CHEN Wangjie is a graduate student of Tongji Law School of 2013, and a Sino-German Double Degree Program Student (at Humboldt University of Berlin). He chooses to pursue his further studies for doctoral degrees at Humboldt University after graduation.

Mr. CHEN Yifu is a graduate student of Tongji Law School of 2018, and a Sino-German Double Degree Program Student (at University of Konstanz).

Mrs. CHEN Mengqi is a graduate student of Tongji Law School of 2015, and a Sino-German Double Degree Program Student (at Humboldt University of Berlin). After graduation, she has assisted a number of Chinese Internet companies conduct their business in Europe. Currently, she serves for Ant Financial Services as the Europe business development and compliance officer.
